I get a lot of visitors to this site who are searching for Christian trucking firms to haul for. There is nothing wrong with that of course. However, I sometimes wonder about the real reasons people have for wanting to run for a Christian based trucking outfit. I’m sure many would just like to have the Christian fellowship and comaraderie which comes from that. There are some things I would like to point out to Christian truckers though.
It is important to look at why you want to drive for a Christian trucking firm. Many think they will be treated more fairly by such a company as opposed to one which is not Christian owned. I hate to say it, but that is not necessarily the case. I know of several outfits which claim to be owned and operated by Christians and they probably are. However, the feedback from drivers with these firms are a sad commentary on the companies. It should not be so, but unfortunately it is. I have also heard the same thing from a Chaplain friend of mine who manages a lot of trucker chapels. He said he has also recommended trucking companies in the past which he has heard about, but did not know of personally. Some of these companies turned out to not be worthy of recommendation. As a result, he doesn’t suggest any companies to truckers anymore.
The point is, don’t think that any problems you may be having in trucking will be solved by running for a Christian company. They may or may not be.
Reasons and Priorities
I would like for you to think in a little different direction for a moment. Why are you in trucking to begin with? Sure, you’re trying to earn a living for yourself and your family. That may seem to be the main reason. You may also enjoy the freedom of the open road. Maybe you were laid off from your previous job and just wanted to try something different. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to try the trucking life and the opportunity finally presented itself. There is nothing wrong with any of these reasons.
If you are a Christian, I want to give you another reason you are probably in trucking. It may be one you have never really thought about. God has you in the trucking industry for another reason besides any of the previously mentioned ones. It is the same reason God places Christians in different occupations. That is to be a witness to those you come in contact with each day. God has His men and women in all sorts of places and occupations to be salt and light to a darkened world of lost men, women, and children. This is the real reason you are in the occupation in which you find yourself.
The Main Purpose of Your Life
There is an old saying, “Grow where you are planted.” It simply means that we are to grow spiritually and be a witness for Christ wherever we find ourselves. Ephesians 2:10 says,
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
You see, our lives are really about doing good works after we are saved. This verse says that is why we were created in Christ. We have other responsibilities, such as caring for our families, but these other responsibilities are to be done while we are going about our task of growing spiritually and doing good works.
Apply It To Your Trucking Job
As truckers, we have an obligation to our employers, customers, and families. But our highest and most important responsiblity is to God to fulfill the work He has given us to do. That includes encouraging other Christian truckers on the road, fellowshipping with them in the truck stop chapels, and witnessing to the unsaved truckers we come across as God gives us the opportunity.
And this can be done whether you run for a Christian owned trucking company or not. In fact you will have more opportunity to be a Christian example and witness to more people if you don’t run for a Christian based outfit. Company employers and dispatchers ought to see that you are different from the other trucking employees by the way you interact with them and deal with problems.
I Peter 3:15 says,
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
This verse says that others should see a difference in your life and ask why you are different. Notice is presumes something- that people will see something different in your life and ask why. Has anyone ask you this lately? If not, maybe it is because they haven’t yet seen how you are different from everyone else.
By running with a “non-Christian” based firm, you will more involed with unsaved people when you are in the terminal that if you worked for a company where most of the people are Christians. You will see these people on a regular basis and be able to build a relationship with them from which you will sooner or later be given the opportunity to present the Gospel. This is in addition to the people you will meet on the road, many of which you will never see again.
Getting Our Priorities Straight
Once we realize why we are in the field we are in and what our main priority should be as Christian truckers, we will also realize that any company we run for will provide opportunities to be the kind of example Christ intended us to be.
The bottom line is, don’t worry about necessarily running for a Christian based trucking firm. If God directs you to one, that’s all well and good. However, just you might just want to open your eyes to all the possiblilities of running for any firm which God may open up for you.
